Meet Elmer (Jersey Steer | 5 Years Old)

Elmer is a sweet and spirited Jersey boy with a story that touches the heart. Born into the dairy industry, he was destined for slaughter at just 3 weeks old—simply because he was male. Thankfully, a compassionate woman stepped in and gave him a chance at life. For five years, Elmer lived safely under her care until zoning issues meant he needed a new home. That’s when he came to Jolene’s Retreat.

Now thriving at the sanctuary, Elmer brings joy and energy to everyone he meets. He’s full of life, incredibly curious, and absolutely loves people—though he’s still learning how big he actually is! His favorite things include chin scratches, exploring his surroundings, and using a small Douglas fir tree as a personal scratching post. One of his closest buddies? Ken, our tiny but mighty bantam rooster, who often hangs out nearby.

Elmer’s playful nature and gentle spirit remind us every day why sanctuary matters.

Meet Gertie (Holstein | 3 Months Old)

Gertie is our newest resident at Jolene’s Retreat — a spirited Holstein calf who was abandoned and in need of a safe, loving home. We were lucky enough to have someone in the community reach out to see if we could take her, and the answer was a resounding yes! We had been hoping to find a friend for our beautiful 6-year-old Jersey boy, Elmer, and Gertie turned out to be the perfect match.

From the moment she arrived, Gertie’s big personality has shone through. She’s full of spunk, with hind legs that love to flail behind her as she runs with the energy of a wild mustang. Beneath all that playful spirit, she has the sweetest, most affectionate heart — always ready for cuddles and love.
